My name is Kate and I write songs, play the guitar, and sing.
You can listen to my
latest album, say hello in person, take part in mail me 1 thing, and most importantly, connect with me on my blog, where I share how I write my songs, unreleased demos, videos, sketches from my journal, interviews with my biggest heroes, and more.
here that I talk with you.

Have you ever gone to see your favorite band and waited around after the show to tell them how much their music meant to you?

Have you ever gotten to hang with your favorite singer or guitar player backstage? If you are one of my fans, I hope you have!  (If not, let’s chat.)

Don’t you love it when you get to hear the real stories behind the songs?

I do– it's why I started making music in the first place!  If you are a music lover, you know what I’m talking about.  Those moments are what keep us going to shows, following our favorite bands so closely, and listening to everything they release.

Growing up, I was electrified by the music of Tina Turner; I had to learn how to play the guitar. I actually wore out her Private Dancer cassette on my Smurf Walkman.  It's all led me to making my own music as well as playing drums and bass, arranging music, producing records, and writing film and theater scores.

But the thing I care about most is connecting with people.  I started this blog to connect with you, to be moved and inspired every week by fans and music lovers like you.

See, for the last three years I haven’t been able to tour.  I’ve been at home taking care of my Mom – she has stage 3c ovarian cancer.

This blog allows me to go deep – every week –  with my fans, friends, and musical cohorts no matter where I am in the world. I riff on songwriting; I share unreleased demos, videos, and sketches from my journal; I talk to you, I talk to my biggest heroes.

Yeah, you can find me on InstaGramTwitter and Facebook, but I give the best stuff to the peeps on my email list.

Not a quite fan yet or are wondering why you should sign up?  Because when I reach out, something happens and when you reach out in return something happens, too.

Talk to you soon!

Big love,

P.S. Want to know what else I am up to? I help ambitious men and women successfully navigate change as a change coach. Kate Schutt
(pronounced “shut”)

Kate is an award-winning songwriter, singer, guitarist, and producer whose voice NPR calls “glassily clear and glossily sweet.”

She studied the influence of jazz on poetry at Harvard, and studied jazz guitar at Berklee College of Music.

Working with legendary producer/arranger Rob Mounsey, Kate recently recorded her new album, Bright Nowhere. It maps the landscape of loss around her mother’s diagnosis and death from ovarian cancer.

Kate spent four years as her mom’s primary caregiver, along the way writing songs about life, loss, and (to use Christopher Hitchens’s potent phrase) “living dyingly.”

Her TEDx talk, “A Grief Casserole -- How to help your friends & family through loss,” has been called nothing short of life-changing for people struggling with grief.

Kate’s songs have won top honors from the John Lennon Songwriting Contest and ASCAP.

She’s shared stages with Scott Colley, Terri Lyne Carrington, and Julian Lage, to name only a few.

After nearly a decade living and making music in Guelph, Ontario, Canada, she now calls New York City home.
